Weather Hammers Gulf Coast.HOUSTON (AP) _ Officials say possible tornado caused the evacuation of a shopping center in the Houston area that sustained roof damage and wall of a storm system that also flooded roads and left thousands of inhabitants without electricity.

Texas City Fire Chief Joe Gorman said the Mall of the Mainland was damaged in heavy storms on Monday. He said that the dispatcher has received reports of a tornado, but that has not been confirmed. He says the center is closed for a structural engineer is studying the stability of the building.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

City National Weather Service received reports of a tornado touching down in Texas City. The service said that has not been confirmed. The area was under a tornado warning Monday.

Texas City is about 40 miles south of Houston.

Center point Energy reported outages affecting about 19,600 customers. The Houston Independent School District said five of its campuses lost power. The Dallas-Fort Worth and parts of West Texas also got soaked Monday.

Soaking is widespread claims that Texas with one of the worst droughts in its history.
