Gene Hackman OK After Fla. Bicycle Accident.Oscar winner Gene Hackman was hospitalized briefly with bumps and bruises Friday after a truck hit him from behind while riding her bicycle in the Florida Keys, his publicist said.
The Hackman, 81 years old, was taken to a Miami hospital and released several hours later after routine testing, publicist Susan Madore said.
Hackman riding without a helmet on a street in Islamorada at 3 pm when the truck hit him, throwing him to the grassy ditch, according to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol. No charges were reported.
During a career that spanned five decades, Hackman has won two Academy Awards and been nominated for three others.
He took the trophy for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in "The French Connection" in 1971 and the Award for Best Actor for "Unforgiving" in 1992.
He was also nominated as Best Actor for his breakthrough role as Buck Barrow, brother of Clyde Barrow in "Bonnie & Clyde" in 1967, and "I Never Sang for My Father" in 1970 and "Mississippi Burning" in 1988. In addition to the Oscars, Hackman has won three Golden Globes and BAFTA two.
Hackman is also widely known for playing Superman's archenemy, Lex Luthor in three films.
