Man Arrested in Connection With LA arson Spree.LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities arrested a man Monday in connection with dozens of suspected arson fire that destroyed the parked cars; buildings burned and shook the residents of Los Angeles over the weekend of New Year.
Police declined to identify the man but said he would be booked later on charges stemming from fires 53 fires that have burned since Friday in Hollywood, West Hollywood neighbor and the San Fernando Valley.
The suspect looked like a "person of interest", videotaped on Saturday near a garage. He was arrested early Monday in a van that matched a description of witnesses.
Firefighters were called to the fire suspicious because the man was arrested, Captain Jamie Moore said.
The fire caused an estimated $ 2 million in damages, but no serious injuries to civilians. One firefighter was injured and another suffered smoke inhalation, said Moore.
Authorities declined to provide other details, saying they did not want to jeopardize the case.
Hundreds of investigators, police officers and firefighters rushed to tackle the wave of fires over the weekend. The police were kept in overtime, and the noise of helicopters and sirens practically nonstop persisted in Hollywood.
Investigators still were busy mapping the sequence of fires, examining more than 100 leads and interviewing witnesses.
The fire left a trail of smoldering rubble in Hollywood, West Hollywood, North Hollywood and the Fairfax district of Los Angeles.
Police urged residents to check their vehicles for signs of tampering and take simple precautions such as locking vehicles, keeping the lights and parking garage in the activity at night and report suspicious transactions.
Despite the arrest, authorities continued to urge vigilance.
"We are not at rest, and we will not stop" extra patrols police commander. Andrew Smith said. "If you have lights in your garage area, keeping them on in tonight."
