The victims were identified as two students Marist women in their early 20s and a male, who was not a student at the school. Their names were not released. Four other people in the house escaped without serious injury.

Marist College basketball games postponed two "out of respect for students affected by this tragedy," Deborah Di Caprio, vice president and Marist dean for student affairs, said in a statement Saturday.

The house off campus on Fairview Avenue was rented by six female Marist students, city police chief said Thomas Mauro.

By the time the fire was initially called in 911 by a passerby at about 1:30, said Mauro seven people were in the house - four residents and three male guests.

The police chief said the group had gone to bed about an hour before the fire was called in authorities. "There was no problem they were aware of the house when they went to bed," he said, basing his comments on interviews with four survivors.

At least two people jumped out a window to safety after realizing that the house was in flames, he said.

The first firefighters to respond to the emergency call attempted to enter the house, but were repelled by the heat and flames, said Chris Maeder, head of the Fairview Fire District, one of the few organizations that have responded to the emergency call.

One victim was found on the second floor of the house, we were down and the third was under "considerable debris collapsed," the police chief. The four survivors were taken to a hospital where they were treated and freed.

They were treated for minor smoke inhalation and other minor injuries and were able to debrief the police.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Maeder said the fire is believed to have started at the back of the first floor.
