West Virginia routs Clemson 70-33 In Orange Bowl

West Virginia routs Clemson 70-33 In Orange Bowl.MIAMI - The West Virginia Mountaineers were hard to stop, and only the mascot of the Orange Bowl could not stop Darwin Cook.

Geno Smith tied the record for a bowl game with six touchdowns, and No. 23-ranked Mountaineers set a bowl scoring record Wednesday night with his high-powered offense. But the security of Cook made the key play when he returned a fumble 99 yards for a touchdown to break the game open and help defeat No. 14 Clemson 70-33.

Cooking comically collided with Obie pet after scoring one of the climbers' five touchdowns in the second quarter, including three in the final 2:29 for a 49-20 advantage. It was the highest-scoring half of a team in a bowl game.

"I've always imagined making plays," said Cook. "If you think that will happen will happen."

Tavon Austin tied a record for any bowl game with four touchdown receptions. Smith was 31, 42, and had 401 yards passing to break the record for the Orange Bowl Tom Brady. Smith also ran for a touchdown, helping West Virginia points to break the record set bowl six nights earlier, when Washington defeated Baylor 67-56 in the Alamo Bowl.

"We could never imagine had 70 points," said Smith.

The Mountaineers (10-3) won his first appearance in the Orange Bowl and improved to 3-0 in the Bowl Championship Series games.

"The kids wanted to come and make a statement, and the only way you can make is that if you play well on all three sides of the ball," said Coach Dana Holgorsen.

Clemson (10-4) lost playing in your main course for the first time in 30 years.

"We're a better team than we played tonight," Coach Dabo Swinney said. "Too many errors, But we'll be back."

The offensive display was the latest in a series of bowls this season, and perhaps the last. The defense is expected to dominate in the final game Monday night when BCS LSU faces Alabama for the national title.

The defenders had their hands full - or rather, no - on a cold night in Miami. Austin Smith and passes combined score of 8, 27, 3 and 37 yards, and Shawne Alston scored two runs short of West Virginia, totaling 589 yards and 31 first downs. Smith was voted most outstanding player of the game.

Even when Clemson was able to corral the climbers, the game was not always more.
