All Narrows Bridge Lanes Reopen

All Narrows Bridge Lanes Reopen. All lanes of the Tacoma Narrows Bridges have reopened, the Washington Sate Patrol said.

The northbound lanes of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge opened, the Washington Sate Patrol said.

The streets of the center of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge opened, the Washington Sate Patrol said.

Also: state ferry service says there is an expectation of two hours at the ferry terminal in Bremerton because of the traffic of the closure of Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The wait at Fauntleroy is also two hours, and waiting to Vashon terminal is 90 minutes.

Updated: 17 hours after an inspection, state officials say the Tacoma Narrows Bridges will remain closed at least one hour.

The two bridges are closed due to large chunks of ice fall on the bridge and bridges at risk for motorists, said the Washington State Patrol.

Ice was 2 inches thick, state officials said after the closure began at noon.

The towers of the two years 1950 and 2007 increased about suspension bridges 500 feet above Puget Sound, and ice can easily be detached from the solid cylindrical wires leading up to the towers.

According to the State Department of Transportation, the last time that the steel towers-1950 bridge was closed by ice was 1996 - and the two bridges were closed in 2008 during a wind storm that may have spilled trucks and cars hit out of their way.

Of course, in 1940, the original bridge across the Tacoma Narrows, "Galloping Gertie," twisted and fell in a windstorm, since the aerodynamic lift and a deck width too narrow.

The State Patrol says it will conduct an evaluation before deciding when to reopen the bridges.

They were obscured by fog midday, but early television KING photographed a thick layer of ice on the cables of suspension bending, as seen from a helicopter. And KIRO television, reporting from a dam on the bank of Tacoma, said the ice booms caused strong as it hit the platform.
