Miss Wisconsin Wins Miss America pageant.LAS VEGAS - A beauty queen 23 year-old from Kenosha, Wisconsin, won the Miss America in Las Vegas Saturday after singing opera and strutting in a bikini black and white beaded evening gown.

Laura Kaeppeli also had to answer a question of whether beauty queens should declare their policy.

"Miss America represents everyone, so I think the message to political candidates is that they are all well," she said. "And so, in these economic times, we must be looking forward to what America needs, and I think that Miss America needs to represent everyone."

Miss Oklahoma Betty Thompson came in second, while Miss New York Kaitlyn Monte third.

Kaeppeli wins $ 50,000 scholarship and received the title of one year. Her platform during the competition was the support and mentoring children of incarcerated parents - a subject close to his heart.

Kaeppeli father, Jeff Kaeppeli, told the Associated Press, he was 18 months in federal prison for mail fraud.

He said when his daughter approached the family to make the staff about his chosen platform, they have supported, even though they knew it would be a public debate.

"We saw this full circle," he said.

Jeff Kaeppeli declared the winner of his daughter on Saturday night was the best day of his life. He attended the event in a black tuxedo with a blue jacket and bow tie.

"He taught us that God can turn anything to good if you let him," he said.

Hometown of Laura Kaeppeli some 97,000 people, in Kenosha is about 40 miles south of Milwaukee.

She specialized in music and vocal performance at a private Lutheran liberal arts college in Kenosha, and said those responsible for performing it plans to obtain a master's degree in speech therapy and become a speech therapist.

Kaeppeli was crowned the new Miss America by a panel of seven judges during a live broadcast on ABC. The event was the culmination of a week of preliminary competitions and months of preparations for the titleholders from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.

As the new Miss America, will Kaeppeli next year touring the country speaking to various groups and raise money for the Children's Network, the official charity of the Miss America Organization.

Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska has won Miss America last year to 17 years to become the youngest winner of the competition since its inception. She said contestants’ chances nerves were at their highest point just before the contest.

"You can always breathe a sigh of relief" after the live competition began, Scanlan said.

Pageant officials earlier announced the winners of preliminary competitions, including Kaeppeli, Lauren Thompson and Miss Hawaii Cheap talent, and Monte, Miss Texas and Miss Kendall Morris Danica Olsen to Utah swimsuit.

Kaeppeli won a $ 2,000 scholarship for his performance of opera "Il Bacio" in the talent competition.

Officials also said Miss Idaho Genevieve Nutting won the $ 2,000 Four Points, while Miss Kentucky, Ann-Blair Thornton won the $ 6,000 scholarship quality of life.

The Miss America Organization boasts as the largest donor in the world of scholarships to women, with about $ 350,000 to be given this year at the national level.

Scanlan said it planned to use his scholarship to help pay for law school, en route to a life in politics.
